Mrs D

You have missed your first deadline Lydia.

There is some good analysis here where you attempt to link to audeince and genre at times. You need to post your 3rd analysis and what you have learnt from your research asap.

General Magazine Ideas

My Magazine ideas:

My magazine's genre will be pop/rock and my audience's age range will be 18-25 year old females. This will then influence the styles and colouring of my magazine. I want my magazine's style to be bold and have the colours black, white and red. I've chosen the colours as black and white can be incorporated into backgrounds easily and the colour red as it can be connected to the provocativeness of women and as my target audience will be women it links well. I will use 2 or 3 different fonts, and these will vary depending on the information. The fonts will mainly be capitals and bold with the exception of band or artist names, or key information. For example; one font will be used for the headings at the top of the page, another for cover lines and another for key words such as celebrity names or key information on the cover or article. My image on my front cover will be of a female artist, the camera angle will be looking up at her and she will have a dominating stance, this will make the artist look powerful and link to the genre and audience as women can aspire or relate to the power and the music they produce is then portrayed as more powerful which links to pop and rock. Within the contents page, I will produce more images of artists and bands to match the cover stories.

NME Magazine analysis

Front cover

I chose the 'NME' magazine, this magazine is aimed for young adults and does not specify to a particular gender. We know this because of the appearance of the magazine and the language used. For example, words choices such as 'hottest' is not very formal language and therefore suggests that the audience is more younger people, it still informs he audience however in an unformal language. We also know that there is no specicif gender curve, however, on this particular front cover ther font is mainly pink and this stereotypically a colour associated with girls. This then contrasts with the main image in the background of  very popular band in black and white. The use of the black and white image shows that they are an older band and it also sets a contrast between the colour and the black and white, showing how the two aren't usually associated and so it makes the cover more attention grabbing as it is not he usual combination of colours. Also, the use of the word 'Outcasts' underneath the heading 'NME' is directly describing the band underneath, it could then link with the colour schemes used on the cover. For example an outcast is someone that does not fit in and the use of the pink coloured font against the black and white image shows that they don't follow the usual colour schemes showing that they are outcasts.
Within the image there's a medium-long shot of the band members sitting down, they have direct address to the camera and the angle is looking down at them. The camera angle could be looking down as they are sitting on a step, the downward angle would usually suggest that they are not as important, however the direct address challenges this as they are pulling a serious face showing that they are important. The image is old and we can tell this as they are wearing old fashioned clothing and has old fashioned hairstyles, such as differing haircuts.
The colour schemes of the front cover are pink, black, grey and white. This links to the genre of music of the band on the front cover as they are old fashioned, so it links with the black and white and the us of pink contrasts with the black and white shows that they are 'outcasts' as they don't exactly fit in or follow the normal route.

Contents page

The contents page is made up of 3 columns, the biggest image is in the middle column, this makes it attention grabbing to the reader as it is the first thing that they see. However, this is not the cover story, instead the cover story is in the first column, this could make it easier for the audience to find but is not as attention grabbing as the image in the centre.
The colour schemes on the contents page do not directly match the ones on the cover as the colours on the cover are pink black and white however on the contents there is only black and white. The font underneath the image in the middle is different to the font on the rest of the page, suggesting that this is a main story or has more importance than the other articles. The other fonts are block capitals however the font under the image in the middle is in a more fancy writing, contrasting with the 'tough', rock genre. Also, every other article heading is in bold block capitals and the others are just block capitals, making the page more interesting to look at. The block capitals link to the genre as they are in capitals and capital letters are associated with shouting or loud noise, making the headings more exciting and linking it to the genre as rock is loud and exciting.
The placement of the page title 'Inside this week' in block capitals is the largest font on the page so, the audience is drawn to the heading first, and the placement of the image directly underneath the title makes it a lot more attention grabbing to the audience as they will be drawn to the title first, and then to the image underneath.
The colour scheme of black and white then runs throughout the images and the text as there is an image of the band 'XX' and they are dressed in black jackets and trousers, this links in with their genre as they are a rock band and black is commonly linked to the strength of rock. the band have direct address and an almost tense looking stance  this suggests that they are challenging the audience, it links with the heading when it says "... only better!" as it could suggest that they are stronger than they used to be, showing the link to the image.

Double Page spread

The double page spread has a long shot image on the left hand page of a member of the band in black and white, this shows that it is an old image and could suggest that  he can't have his picture taken again, this links to the article title "The life and death of Joey Ramone" however they have used the black and white image and incorporated it into the colour theme. The use of the colour pink shows how they are not the usual rock band as normally they would go for darker colours, so this shows that they were more unique.
The fact that the colour scheme matches the front page shows that this article directly links to the front cover
The us of the pull quote "Odd creature" is in a pink text box, this emphasizes the fact that they were not necessarily normal, the pull quote also shows their audience is not for older people, as the although the information is informative, it is not formal. This suggests that it is aimed more to a young adult audience.
There is a drop capital on the first word in the article 'So' and the colour of the 's' is pink, linking to the colour scheme and to the genre of music.
The font on the page varies, in the article heading there are two different fonts. The name "Joey Ramone" is in a different font and colour to the rest of the heading, showing they are aiming for more attention on the name. Although the fonts are different, they are both in capitals and bold. Underneath the heading, more names are changed to bold pink writing, showing how the names are important to the article and making them link to the colour scheme.

Q Magazine Analysis

Q Magazine

Front cover

I chose the magazine 'Q', this magazine is aimed for young adults and has a pop/rock genre, we know this as the language used on the front cover is informative however the text is not 'slang' but nor do they use formal language, for example "Interview Bonanza!" shows that the magazine contains a lot of interviews for the reader, however the use of the word 'Bonanza' shows that it is more casual and direct to the audience, unlike a magazine aimed at older people that would be less entertaining and more informative and to the point.
The colour schemes on the front cover are; red, black, grey and white. The colour red is used behind the heading 'Q' and this colour then continues on the front page, linking with the main cover lines such as 'Neil Young' and 'Rock star to radio DJ' this suggests that as the most important word on the front cover is surrounded in red, that the text in red will be the more important cover lines and will automatically be more eye catching as they match the house theme.
Other cover lines are in bold black, they link in with the house theme as underneath the 'Q' they have the tag line 'The world's greatest music magazine' that is in a black box, also making the audience connect that the black font is less important than the red text, however still has importance.
The biggest font on this page is the word 'Killers' in grey capital letters, the fact that the font is grey shows a contrast to the house theme of red white and black. The contrast then makes it more eye-catching and the fact that the word 'The' just before the word 'Killers' is in red, suggests that the word after it is going to be important. The background of this front cover is plain white, allowing for the background to link in with the colouring of the font and cover lines.
The font size on the front cover varies with each cover line or title, generally with importance the text size increases. For example, the biggest font on the page is the 'Q' and the second biggest is 'Killers' showing that these two are the most attention grabbing and have the most importance within the front page.
On this magazine the main focus is on the large image of the male, he has direct address with the camera and the camera angle is looking up at him, suggesting that he is a dominant figure, something that men are stereo-typically portrayed as in media. The eye contact also adds to the appearance of dominance and confidence, showing he is an important figure or well respected in his genre. Also, he is wearing a black leather jacket, and as leather jackets are usually worn by men with a high status or with a lot of confidence, it could suggest that he has the same qualities. The placement of the man on the front cover is effective as his head is next to the heading 'Q' and as the audience's eye will be drawn to the title, the placement of the man's face next to the title will draw more attention to him, showing that he is the main focus of the cover and has more importance throughout the magazine.
The colouring of the image match the colour scheme, for example; he is wearing a black leather jacket with white writing saying ' Brandon Flowers Reborn' this informs the audience that the man in the image is Brandon Flowers and the fact that white writing on black has only otherwise been used under the heading shows that this fits within the colour theme.
There are additional images linking to the cover lines, and these images link in with the colour scheme, for example; the cover line 'Neil Young' has an image of Neil Young to the right in a red top, linking it in with the colour scheme.

Contents Page

The contents page is spread over two pages and has 4 columns, two on each page. there are images on these two pages are generally all at the tops of the columns, with the exclusion of the cover story. All of the images are within the colour theme, for example the first image on the left is of a man dressed in black and white with red blood stains on his top. Other images include Florence Welch, wearing white and with red hair, also meeting the colour scheme.

The differing text colours and sizes change depending on the heading and it's relation to the front cover, for example all of the cover stories are featured with images at the top of the columns and have bigger, bold, red title in capitals, this links in with the colour scheme, and the use of this colour scheme is neutral to men and women and all ages. Showing that the magazine isn't specifically for one gender or the other, however red is usually linked with danger or provocativeness and could suggest that this magazine would be exciting to read.
However, the audience can be more determined by the lexical choices within the headings, for example; 'celeb golf cheats' the use of the word 'celeb' shows how the text is less formal and aimed at younger people as older audience's go for more informative magazines.
The colours of the cover story stand out more than the other articles on the page as it has a black text box filled with white writing saying 'cover story' and as the other cover lines on the pages are in red writing it shows the contrast to the white writing making the text more attention grabbing to the audience.

Double page spread

On the double page spread there is a long shot image spread on the right side page of Brandon Flowers, the colours of the image are very dark blacks and blues, this links to the genre as they are a rock band and the dark colours could present a stronger emotion that would be more linked to this genre of music. The brightest colour in this image is his skin, as it contrasts with his dark clothes and the dark background. This creates a contrast between his face and the background, making him stand out from the rest of the image, this suggests that he could stand out from other bands in his genre. In the image he is  wearing a dark leather jacket which is stereo-typically something that someone of a high status would wear, or someone that shouldn't be reckoned with. This makes him appear well respected and tough, and this links to the genre as rock music is tough and not very light - hearted. In this image he is jumping, and as he has been captured in mid air it gives the image an eery appearance, this suggests that he is different to other bands as his image is more creative.
Underneath the pull quote is the name 'Brandon Flowers' and this is in a red font, showing a contast against the black background and it stands out as it is the only red text on both pages of the double spread, this then shows the differentiation between his name and the rest of the article.
On this image there is a pull quote, with "I live my life how I want to." in it, this shows how he doesn't care about other people's opinions, and this generally suggests that he is successful enough for other people's opinions not to matter.
The is a drop capital about half way through the article on the word 'We're'  and the W is in a fancy black font, contrasting with the more strong appearance of the rock genre that would be more associated with a bolder font. This font is then repeated at the top of the page showing that the theme will run throughout the article, continuing the contrast.

NME Magazine

  • Competitors: Q, Kerrang
  • Weekly issues
  • Total circulation: 23,924

I have learnt that the type of magazine that I want to produce is aimed for young adults, the genre that my magazine will be is a pop/rock magazine, similar to Q.
I will need to produce a magazine that is aimed directly at young adults, I will do this by using language that is informative but not formal and make the magazine appeal to the market, for example using some colour, but not too many different colours as this can be considered more childish and will not appeal to my market. I will keep a font and colour theme throughout my magazine.
The magazine will also be priced similarly at about £2.99 and will be released monthly. I could include promotional offers such as posters or CDs to make the magazine appeal to the market more.
