NME Magazine analysis

Front cover

I chose the 'NME' magazine, this magazine is aimed for young adults and does not specify to a particular gender. We know this because of the appearance of the magazine and the language used. For example, words choices such as 'hottest' is not very formal language and therefore suggests that the audience is more younger people, it still informs he audience however in an unformal language. We also know that there is no specicif gender curve, however, on this particular front cover ther font is mainly pink and this stereotypically a colour associated with girls. This then contrasts with the main image in the background of  very popular band in black and white. The use of the black and white image shows that they are an older band and it also sets a contrast between the colour and the black and white, showing how the two aren't usually associated and so it makes the cover more attention grabbing as it is not he usual combination of colours. Also, the use of the word 'Outcasts' underneath the heading 'NME' is directly describing the band underneath, it could then link with the colour schemes used on the cover. For example an outcast is someone that does not fit in and the use of the pink coloured font against the black and white image shows that they don't follow the usual colour schemes showing that they are outcasts.
Within the image there's a medium-long shot of the band members sitting down, they have direct address to the camera and the angle is looking down at them. The camera angle could be looking down as they are sitting on a step, the downward angle would usually suggest that they are not as important, however the direct address challenges this as they are pulling a serious face showing that they are important. The image is old and we can tell this as they are wearing old fashioned clothing and has old fashioned hairstyles, such as differing haircuts.
The colour schemes of the front cover are pink, black, grey and white. This links to the genre of music of the band on the front cover as they are old fashioned, so it links with the black and white and the us of pink contrasts with the black and white shows that they are 'outcasts' as they don't exactly fit in or follow the normal route.

Contents page

The contents page is made up of 3 columns, the biggest image is in the middle column, this makes it attention grabbing to the reader as it is the first thing that they see. However, this is not the cover story, instead the cover story is in the first column, this could make it easier for the audience to find but is not as attention grabbing as the image in the centre.
The colour schemes on the contents page do not directly match the ones on the cover as the colours on the cover are pink black and white however on the contents there is only black and white. The font underneath the image in the middle is different to the font on the rest of the page, suggesting that this is a main story or has more importance than the other articles. The other fonts are block capitals however the font under the image in the middle is in a more fancy writing, contrasting with the 'tough', rock genre. Also, every other article heading is in bold block capitals and the others are just block capitals, making the page more interesting to look at. The block capitals link to the genre as they are in capitals and capital letters are associated with shouting or loud noise, making the headings more exciting and linking it to the genre as rock is loud and exciting.
The placement of the page title 'Inside this week' in block capitals is the largest font on the page so, the audience is drawn to the heading first, and the placement of the image directly underneath the title makes it a lot more attention grabbing to the audience as they will be drawn to the title first, and then to the image underneath.
The colour scheme of black and white then runs throughout the images and the text as there is an image of the band 'XX' and they are dressed in black jackets and trousers, this links in with their genre as they are a rock band and black is commonly linked to the strength of rock. the band have direct address and an almost tense looking stance  this suggests that they are challenging the audience, it links with the heading when it says "... only better!" as it could suggest that they are stronger than they used to be, showing the link to the image.

Double Page spread

The double page spread has a long shot image on the left hand page of a member of the band in black and white, this shows that it is an old image and could suggest that  he can't have his picture taken again, this links to the article title "The life and death of Joey Ramone" however they have used the black and white image and incorporated it into the colour theme. The use of the colour pink shows how they are not the usual rock band as normally they would go for darker colours, so this shows that they were more unique.
The fact that the colour scheme matches the front page shows that this article directly links to the front cover
The us of the pull quote "Odd creature" is in a pink text box, this emphasizes the fact that they were not necessarily normal, the pull quote also shows their audience is not for older people, as the although the information is informative, it is not formal. This suggests that it is aimed more to a young adult audience.
There is a drop capital on the first word in the article 'So' and the colour of the 's' is pink, linking to the colour scheme and to the genre of music.
The font on the page varies, in the article heading there are two different fonts. The name "Joey Ramone" is in a different font and colour to the rest of the heading, showing they are aiming for more attention on the name. Although the fonts are different, they are both in capitals and bold. Underneath the heading, more names are changed to bold pink writing, showing how the names are important to the article and making them link to the colour scheme.
